What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot properly store and use fuel for energy. Glucose, a form of sugar, is the body’s main fuel and insulin is the hormone the body uses to move glucose from the blood to the cells. Diabetes develops if the body cannot make any or enough insulin, or it is unable to use the insulin it produces. The result is a high level of glucose in the blood or hyperglycemia.
Types of diabetes:
·Type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disease in which the body fails to
produce insulin)
·Type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance with a decrease in insulin
production)
·Gestational diabetes (results from insulin resistance caused by the
hormone produced during pregnancy).

What causes Diabetes?
The exact cause of type 1 and 2 diabetes remains unknown. Type 1 diabetes is not preventable, and it is not caused by eating too much sugar. The body's defense system may attack insulin-making cells by mistake, but we don't know why. People are usually diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before the age of 30, most often during childhood or their teens.
In type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body does not use it properly. While no one knows the exact cause of type 2 diabetes, it's more likely to occur in people who:
·are over 45 years of age
·are overweight
·have a family history of diabetes
·developed gestational diabetes during a pregnancy
·have given birth to a baby that is more than 9 lbs
If you are overweight, your risk of developing type 2 diabetes will be higher. A diet that promotes healthy weight loss is an important step to help prevent type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes and Weight
Type 2 diabetes is associated with insulin resistance. When a person is overweight, the cells in the body become less sensitive to the insulin that is released from the pancreas. The lower your weight, the less insulin resistance there is, and the less insulin you need
(whether natural or injected), and the better the control of the diabetes.
If you have type 2 diabetes, it is important to discuss proper weight loss programs and fitness routines with your physician.
